Korfball in Poland has a nearly 20 years tradition. The first steps were done in 1987. Till nowadays the biggest success was the 9th position on the World Championships in 1999 in Australia and a title of the Most Spectacular Team.
Korfball in Poland is played on different age-levels: from the youngest players under 10 (regional and local tournaments), young juniors (national championships) and juniors (national championships), university students (students cup) till of course seniors.
The adult players are competing in Polish Korfball League (Polska Liga Korfballu) which last season consisted of seven teams. There has been one club more joining this open competition every season from few last years. From the new season (2006/2007) PKF has organised the new seniors competition based on a form of a true league (before 2006 it was organised into 3-4 tournaments and play-offs finals were played between the best two). The best two clubs last season were the most titled club AKK AWF Warszawa and Mega Sports Warszawa which competed in the last finals. AKK AWF won 2:1 in three final matches. The most experienced teams are also: AKK AWF Biala Podlaska and Lubball Lubliniec. In the last season they were on third and fourth position in the final ranking. But there were also the beginers from the capital of Poland: Team BCD and AZS EWS. The last one is the university team led by the champions player Agnieszka Tarasiewcz-Aid.
The Polish Korfball Federation is introducing korfball at Polish universities. After few events promoting korfball in students society with help of Academic Sports Association (Akademicki Zwiazek Sportowy) there were 7 teams at the 1st Polish Students Cup (Puchar ZG AZS w Korfballu). The best team was from Wroclaw were more then half players used to play for Iglica Wroclaw. But there were few totally new teams from the regions where korfball had been absent if we look at the last years: Lodz, Zgierz, Czestochowa and Olsztyn.
Olsztyn is a special town for Polish Korfball because there have been summer camps for more then 350 players every year from 15 years and the first steps of Polish Korfball were done in Kortowo (Olsztyn) in 1987.
But the success of Polish Korfball will be made by present juniors. In juniors' competition there were 27 teams. The biggest and the strongests are: Maratonczyk Kolo (small town between Warsaw and Poznan) and placed closed to Warsaw: Cirkus Konstancin and Strzala Duczki. But there are more small school clubs.
Juniors became seniors every year and the interest is stronger and stronger. This seson we hope to open the 2nd league.
In the long term strategy PKF is focusing on taking more ex-juniors into university sports clubs and seniors as well. Last few years too much juniors stoped their korfball career after secondary school. We hope that in this way we get to more people and new regions as well.
The Polish Korfball Federation is working also on the international development and focuses on Lithuania. And that is the reason why there is the Lithuanian flag and link on this site.
We are open to any suggestion from foreign countries and interested in any youth exchange.
